Temporary Change to Practice Boundary for New Patient Registrations

Due to increased demand for appointments and ongoing GP workforce shortages, we are introducing a temporary reduction to our practice boundary for new patient registrations.

This change will be in place for 6 months, until the end of June 2026, and has been agreed in collaboration with local GP practices and the Integrated Care Board (ICB).

Temporary Bounday

Important information:

  • Existing patients are not affected by this change.
  • All new patient registrations will be subject to an address check when the registration form is received.
  • Patients living outside the temporary boundary will not be able to register during this period.
  • Patients outside the new temporary boundary. Our staff will check your postcode and advise if you fall out of the reduced catchment area. You will be directed to visit the NHS website to check your postcode and the next closest GP practice to your home address.

We appreciate your understanding while we take this step to ensure we can continue to provide safe and effective care for our patients.

If you have any questions, please contact the practice.

Register at our surgery

Our surgery covers Cockermouth and the surrounding area, when registering online you will be informed if you fall within our area and also receive information of other local GP practices that may be available to you.

NHS - Register with a GP surgery

Accountable / Named GP for all Patients

All patients registered at the Castlegate and Derwent surgery have a named GP who has the overall responsibility for your care and support but you are free to see any of our GPs at the surgery.

Temporary Patients

If you are a UK resident and you will be living in our practice area for less than 3 months, you can be treated at our surgery as a 'temporary resident'. Please note: all requests for repeat medications MUST be made to your own GP.

To apply for temporary registration, enter the postcode of where you are living or staying.

Regular NHS care is available to UK residents only. If you are not usually resident in the UK then we can provide emergency care only.

Register for proxy access

A GP surgery can give someone proxy access so they can help another person manage their GP health and care.

A proxy may be able to act for the person they support, by:

  • ordering repeat prescriptions
  • booking appointments
  • contacting the surgery or speaking to surgery staff
  • viewing test results or vaccinations
  • accessing all or part of the GP health record, to help with health-related tasks and managing health issues
