First Aid with Pony Stars
Earlier this month our Nurse Clare spent some time teaching some of the local children at Pony Stars some First Aid.
Pony Stars are the Junior Challenges awards From the British Horse Society that encourages children to discover, develop and nurture their love for ponies and the outdoors. There are over 100 topics that are covered including care for horses both inside the stable and outside in the fields.
They learn about anatomy of the horse grooming, feeding, bandaging and first aid for ponies. They also learn about the environment such as poisonous plants, disease prevention, fence building, Highway Code and lots of other things to keep both horses and people safe.
"The session was about first aid for riders and other people who may be around the ponies. They knew quite a lot about first aid to begin with and were very keen to take part in bandaging themselves, making a sling out of a t-shirt or scarf, learning how to treat cuts and burns and how to look after someone who was unconscious. The session was a great success with all the children, and was a lovely afternoon out in the community."
